MSS 274 R
Application: A pilot needs assessment of men who have sex with men (MSM) who obtain pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Bangkok, Thailand and use it in Hong Kong (“PrEP tourists”)
(Executive Summary submitted by the applicant)
Applicant: The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Objectives: The objectives of this project are:
  1. To investigate level of adherence to daily dosage of PrEP obtained from Bangkok during the 3-month follow-up period among HK PrEP tourists, and reasons for non-adherence.
  2. To investigate prevalence of misuse of PrEP obtained from Bangkok (i.e., using on-demand during sexual intercourse, discontinuation without consulting doctors, sharing or selling to others) during the 3-month follow-up period.
  3. To investigate prevalence of uptake of testing required for PrEP users (HIV, STI, and kidney function testing) in HK or elsewhere, after using PrEP obtained from Bangkok in HK during the 3-month follow-up period. Those who have used such services in HK or elsewhere will be asked some details about the services (location, provider, cost, satisfaction).
  4. To investigate prevalence of risk compensation behaviours (e.g., higher frequency of unprotected anal intercourse) among HK PrEP tourists, during the 3-month follow-up period after obtaining PrEP from Bangkok, and factors assessed at baseline that predicts risk compensation measured.
  5. To investigate demands and needs for PrEP and other services/programs (e.g., side-effects management, medication adherence support, interventions reducing risk behaviours, psychological support and general enquiry) to be provided by NGO and other organizations in HK among PrEP tourists.
