MSS 155R
Application: A Study of Pharmacogenomics for Therapeutic and Prognostic Guidance towards HIV/AIDS patients on Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART)
Applicant: Department of Microbiology, The University of Hong Kong
Objectives: The objectives of this programme are:-
  1. to study the prevalence of host genetic markers in association of hypersensitivity reactions, group toxicity and other side effects relating to therapeutic outcome among HIV+ patients on HAART;
  2. to develop a low cost DNA sequencing based assay to identify host genetic markers in association with drug hypersensitivity and toxicity;
  3. to apply a low-cost in-house genotypic resistance testing (GRT) as baseline monitoring for newly initiating highly active antiretroviral therapy (HARRT) patients;
  4. to implement a low-cost GRT to monitor drug resistance in patients showing clinical failure to HAART with various HIV-1 subtypes infections;
  5. to monitor the spread and transmission of HIV-1 subtypes prevalent in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions; and
  6. to build up database on host and viral genomics as guidance for personalized regimen of HAART for HIV/AIDS patients in Hong Kong.
